The Artist in Residence

I would have to say that my stay at Custer State Park, as an Artist in Residence, has to be one of the most intriguing things I have done.

It has been years now since I received my first invite to display my artwork at this beautiful State Park. It’s gorgeous, full of roaming wildlife, and has no shortage of inspiring scenery.

Custer State Park in Paint

To date, I have stayed in three different locations during the five years that I participated in the program. Each site provided a different experience in the area; prairie vistas, crystal clear lakes, mountain backdrops, walking trails, distant views. What more could an artist ask for?

With all the beautiful subjects at my disposal, I felt compelled to paint, and that is precisely what I did. I went for hikes in the morning, painted around the lunch hour, and snapped a bounty of reference photos that whisper to me in my studio… “Paint me!”

Park Staff, Visitors… and the Artist

The staff at the park were very welcoming, and I felt like part of a family during my time there. As well, people traveling through the park appreciated the artists’ presence. I watched as several tourists snatched-up a painting, excited to have a unique token all their own to remember their voyage. Don’t forget to look for me the next time you’re there!
